After reading a journal kept by a Gilbert ancestor, Jeremy begins to sketch again — a hobby he quit when his parents died. Sheriff Forbes notifies Damon of another attack and Damon offers to try to track down the killer. Alaric helps Jeremy, Tyler and Mayor Lockwood, while Elena makes a shocking discovery.

Jeremy introduces Alaric, his new history teacher, to Jenna, as Bonnie continues to have terrifying dreams. Despite Elena’s efforts, Bonnie and Caroline argue over the medallion. Meanwhile, Damon tells Stefan the true reason he returned to Mystic Falls.

On his birthday, Stefan (Paul Wesley) is surprised by a visit from Lexi (guest star Arielle Kebble, “Gilmore Girls”), one of his oldest friends. Damon’s offer to help Sheriff Forbes (guest star Marguerite MacIntyre) has sudden and tragic results.

As Vicki’s (Kayla Ewell) behavior becomes more dangerous, Stefan (Paul Wesley) tries to help her, and Elena (Nina Dobrev) tries to convince Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) to forget about Vicki. Unaware of what’s really happening, Matt (Zach Roerig) takes Vicki to the high school’s haunted house, but the evening soon takes a terrifying turn.

Elena demands that Stefan explain the frightening events that have been happening in Mystic Falls. In flashbacks, Stefan explains how his rivalry with Damon began.
